Being America’s all time favorite, burgers are easily available in drive throughs, fine dining restaurants and in michelin restaurants.

Globally, McDonalds is known to sell 75 burgers per second! So where exactly did this globally loved snack originate?

Origin Story of Burger

It is often said that Germany is home of the dish. While the idea for it came from Hamburg, the concept of sandwiches was invented much later. To everyone’s surprise, the idea of minced beef predates Hamburg. The Mongol horsemen are known for inventing a similar style of beef, in the 12th century.

Where Burgers Were Actually Originated?

Burgers can be easily considered as America’s favorite food. Worldwide, McDonald’s sells 75 of them per second! So where exactly did this tasty beef sandwich originate? What is the origin story of them—does it have a single inventor as most people claim?

Many believe that back in the 19th centuary, in Germany,  the beef was minced and mixed with garlic, onions, salt and pepper, and was then shaped into patties to make the famous Hamburg steaks. At that time, these were pretty pricey as they were considered gourmet based on the quality of Hamburg beef.

As the German immigrants arrived in New York and Chicago, many opened restaurants to earn a living. A lot of those restaurant menus had Hamburg steak, which was an Americanized version of the famous German offering, often making it the most expensive.

At the time of the Industrial Revolution, food carts would serve the factory workers. As they were not easy to eat while standing, the beef pattie was put between two buns, giving it the look most people are used to these days.
