The Ford Mustang and Focus Fusion are great American cars made by the Ford Motor Company, which have been around since 1903 (when Henry Ford founded it). Since then, they’ve made over 15 million vehicles, including the famous Model T car that helped kick off the automobile revolution in America. The Mustang and Focus Fusion both have strong reputations as well-made cars with high levels of reliability, safety, and longevity.
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is an American multinational automaker headquartered in Dearborn, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit. It was founded by Henry Ford and incorporated on June 16, 1903. The company sells automobiles and commercial vehicles under the Ford brand and most luxury cars under the Lincoln brand.
1965 was a year of great change in America. It was also a time of great change for Ford Motor Company. Just a few years before, Ford introduced two of its most iconic vehicles—the original Mustang and, later that same year, the Thunderbird (first generation). Now, just three years later, it would introduce another pair of legendary cars—the new 1966 Mustangs (second generation) and Torino/Fairlane (first generation). Unfortunately for some fans, neither would sell well.
For as long as cars have been a part of America’s cultural consciousness, they’ve served as symbols of freedom, individuality, personal pride—even a kind of Manifest Destiny. It’s little wonder that both Henry Ford (who built his first car in 1896) and Edsel Ford (who purchased control of the company from his father in 1919) put Mustangs on America’s roadways. And it makes sense that these high-performance pony cars continue to roll off assembly lines today.
In May 2012, Ford announced a $600 million investment in its Flat Rock Assembly Plant to create an all-new 2.3-liter, four-cylinder engine to be used in several of its vehicles; it said that it was investing another $200 million in one of its Ohio plants to retool it for production of both hybrids and fuel cells.
While Tesla Motors has gotten a lot of attention for their electric cars, there hasn’t been as much buzz about Ford’s efforts to develop fuel-efficient, hybrid electric cars. This doesn’t mean that Ford is making a huge mistake by not devoting as much time to developing electric cars as its competitors—it just means that it knows what it needs to do in order to stay competitive in a new, highly-competitive market.
After 2014, Ford will no longer produce three of its most beloved cars—the Ford Fiesta, Ford Focus, and Ford Fusion. While there’s a new generation of each one coming out within the next few years, they’ll be lighter and more fuel efficient (especially in hybrid mode), but they won’t have as much personality as their predecessors.
